Arguing with a Checker?

Thanks to The Krazy Coupon Lady for this post!

I saw this email in our KCL inbox, and had to laugh out loud!
I kind of feel like a Mediator or Marriage Counselor. :)

What do I do when I have an argument with the cashiers.
At Target they wouldn’t let me stack a store coupon with a manufacturer coupon.

START OUT ON THE RIGHT FOOT:

I always ask my checker if they want all the coupons at the end, or as we go.
It varies on the store and checker.
If they want them all at the end, I usually don’t hand them the whole stack.
I will give them one set, tell them what it is for and how many I have
(this helps, because the less reading and counting they have to do, the happier they are)

LEARN THE RULES.

Be able to quote all the rules in your sleep. Just being confident will help the checkers realize that you know what you are doing.

For example, here is the most common problem couponers face:
Coupons say “Limit 1 Coupon Per Purchase.” , And your checker is telling you that means you can’t use 2 of the same coupon on your order.

You answer will be: A purchase refers to buying any item. If I buy 30 items on a single shopping trip, I just made 30 purchases. 30 Bottles of Shampoo = 30 Purchases. 1 swipe of the debit card = 1 transaction, no matter how many items you bought. When a coupon states “Limit 1 Coupon Per Purchase.”, it is meant to enforce the point that you may not use two of the exact same coupons on one item.

PRINT THE STORE COUPON POLICY AND KEEP IT IN YOUR BINDER.

This should save you every single time. Most often, checkers and managers don’t know much about their coupon policy. Instead they encounter a couponer and think what we are doing is against policy, and they just tell you whatever comes to their brain first. Now, I am being a little harsh but I am sure this has happened to many of you. This is when I let the printed coupon policy do my talking. For example, checkers have been trained that you can only except 1 coupon per item. Which is correct, if you are talking about manufacturer coupons- but most stores, including Target allow you to use 1 manufacturer coupon and 1 store coupon on 1 item. They have kindly included that in their printable coupon policy.

Print Walmart’s Policy
Print Target’s Policy
Print Rite Aid’s Policy

STAYING NICE GOES A LONG WAY

I have had my share of frustrating experiences at checkout, but the longer I coupon, the more I am learning to play nice. It seriously helps if you stay nice and calm, smile and just politely (and without force) explain what the policy is. If the checker gets frustrated, just calmly ask to speak with a manager. Offer to let them read the policy and say things like: “It’s my understanding that the policy says [this], can you explain to me what your interpretation is?”

DON’T BE AFRAID TO WALK AWAY

If your checker isn’t following their policy and you don’t have the time or inclination to stick up for yourself- please don’t feel like you need to buy the items. There is nothing wrong with politely telling them that if they won’t accept your coupons, you do not want to make the purchases.

TALK TO CUSTOMER SERVICE

Whether you have a horrible experience or a great experience call their corporate customer service phone number to let them know. Stores want their employees to treat couponers with respect and they love to hear if that is happening in their stores. Target encourages you to call them while you are in the store if you encounter managers or checkers not following their written policy. Please save their phone number in your cell phone. (800) 440-0680

And to answer the question from Sherry, all Target store’s MUST follow the corporate coupon policy. If they are not letting you use 1 store coupon and 1 manufacturer coupon, print the policy and show it to them. If they insist, ask that they call the customer service number (listed above) while you are still in the store, and that should solve your problem. Thanks for the email Sherry!

The Saving Experiment at walgreens *video*

Click on Link below go watch this video!!
Saving Experiments: can modern coupon clippers beat savers of the past?

By Julia Scott

WALGREENS TIPS
  • One thing to remember about Walgreens RR is you can not use a ”chap stick RR” to pay for another chap stick and have another RR print. BUT you can use a “toothpaste” RR to pay for chap stick and have another RR print.
  • Also remember that Walgreens has a coupon item ratio rule, you can only use as many coupons as you have items. They count RR as coupons. So if I was only buying 4 items ( all of which had manufacture coupons which meant my item coupon ratio was already 4 to 4) I wanted to pay with a RR I would need to ad a filler item something cheap like a pencil. This would then make my coupon ration 5 ( 4 manufacturer coupons and 1 register reward) and my item ratio 5. I then could pay with my coupons and RR with no problem. An in store coupon does NOT count as a coupon in this ratio….just as a sale price.
  • Also remember that only one RR per product will print per transaction. For example If wanted to buy 3 bottles of Aussie shampoo. In order to have 2 RR print for each one I had to buy them in 3 transactions. My store is happy to let me go thru the line more than once ……but some store will limit you.
  • You can not pay for sales tax with a RR

What a great way to build up your stash of coupons and even better, for products you actually like and use! I would suggest, just like Kristin did, to set aside time each day to email a few companies... maybe 2 or even 10. If you email a few companies everyday for a year, just imagine all the coupons you'll be receiving on a regular basis! Pretty motivating, huh? I think I may have to email a few companies right now!

**If you need more ideas for companies to email, then make sure to check out this post over at Couponing To Disney. If you scroll down a little, you'll see a long alphabetical list of the 250 companies she emailed! You can also check out her post here where she discusses why it's a great idea to start doing this and how to personalize your emails for each company you decide to write.

Walgreens Trip 9/26 Sat

wow!! I did great today!!! even my mom was shocked!!

First Transaction:

(I should've really searched for a cheaper item than the pencil I was in a rush)
I didn't need pencils with this order either I only had 4 coupons/rr and 5 products)
If I had another rr/coupon than that would've worked! and If i had 2 more rr's/coupons I would've needed another pencil...lol
Ok...I'm getting it now!! See I'm learning too!
ITS A TRICK!!!..lol
(See important info below on rr's/coupons)

toothbrushes 2/ $4.00 ( b1g1 coupon -$1.79 and it gave back $2 rr)
used my $5 rr for nail polish I got yesterday , and 2 rr's

Paid- $2.62
Got back
$2 rr
$5 rr Sally Hansen

Second Transaction:

2 J&J lotion 2 $5.99 (2/ $1. off coupons)
toothbrushes 2/ $4.00 (b1g1 coupon -$1.79 and it gave back $2 rr)
3 Sally Hansen 40% off (2/$1. coupons and $5 rr from 1st order also got back $3 rr :)

Ok now on that order I had 9 coupons and 11 products I didn't need 2 of the pencils!
now if I had 2 more rr's/coupons then yes I would've kept the pencils!!...lol
(See important info below on rr's/coupons)

Paid $5.24
got back
$2 rr
$3 Sally Hansen

darn I was in such a rush I forgot to get the Thermcare pads and that's what messed me up!!
I did have this all written down by the way, see I don't even follow my own directions..lol

Also see on the right some helpful Walgreen links and Videos ;)

added this helpful info:

♥ Register Rewards (RR) ♥

register rewards (RR) are coupons from the Catalina machine that print after you make a qualifying purchase. Most RRs are "On Your Next Order" (OYNO) which can be used like cash on your next order. (Sometimes you may receive a Catalina for $ off a particular item or an advertisement for an rr deal.)

♥ how can i use rr? ♥

generally, you can use your rr like cash on your next purchase. but of course there are exceptions.

Most RRs explicitly say that they can not be used on tobacco, alcohol, tax, lottery tickets, money orders, stamps, dairy, or any gift cards or pre-paid cards. however, some stores still allow rr's to be used on some of these items, so ymmv.

as stated in the fine print, you cannot use more RRs and manufacturer coupons than number of items you are buying. as long as you are buying as many items as you have rr & manufacturer coupons, you should be able to use more than one rr. (store coupons do not affect how many manufacturer and rr's you can use.)

You cannot "roll" rr's into the same deal 99% of the time. for example, if you use an RR from Kellogg's to purchase more Kellogg's items, you will NOT get another RR. the best way to "roll" is to use your Kelloggs RR to complete a different rr deal. You can then use the RRs from the 2nd deal, to purchase more Kelloggs.

Sally Hansen had its own deal so you are able to flip those since the rr is for that product only!

♥ how can to use coupons? ♥

if you are using a manufacturer's coupon and a wags coupon on the same item and hoping for overage towards your other items, give the manufacturer's coupon first. a manufacturer's coupon will be rejected by the register if it is over the cost of the item, but a wags coupon will go through.

for example:
the incorrect order...
deodorant $1.99
-$1 in-ad coupon (wags coupon)
=$.99
-$1 manufacturer's coupon - will beep and register will not accept it because it is over $.99!

but if you give the cashier the manufacturer's coupon 1st...
deodorant $1.99
-$1 manufacturer's coupon
=$.99
-$1 in-ad coupon (wags coupon) - will not beep
=-$.01 (of course you will need another item or tax on your transaction for the penny to apply to)

the registers will not accept more coupons/rr than items. so if want to use rr, but already have a manufacturer's coupon for each item, you can add a small "filler" item for each rr. use the cheapest items you can find (single pencils are good.)

  • B1G1 or BOGO = Buy one get one free
  • FAR = free after rebate
  • HBA = Health & Beauty Aids
  • MFR = manufacturer
  • MIR = Mail In Rebate
  • OOP = Out Of Pocket
  • RP = red plum coupon insert from sunday newspaper
  • RR = register rewards (from printer store printer)
  • SS = smartsource coupon insert from sunday newspaper
  • V = Valassis (same as red plum) coupon insert WYB = When You Buy
  • One thing to remember about Walgreens RR is you can not use a ”chap stick RR” to pay for another chap stick and have another RR print. BUT you can use a “toothpaste” RR to pay for chap stick and have another RR print.
  • Also remember that Walgreens has a coupon item ratio rule, you can only use as many coupons as you have items. They count RR as coupons. SO on transaction #1 I wanted to pay with a bunch of $1 RR as well as others. BUT I was only buying 4 items ( all of which had manufacture coupons which meant my item coupon ratio was already 4 to 4) I wanted to pay with 9 RR ( for a total of $25 in RR) so I had to buy 9 filler items so my coupon item ratio was now 13 items 13 coupons.
  • Also remember that only one RR per product will print per transaction. For example I wanted to buy 4 bottles of Dayquil but it has a $3 RR print when you buy 2. In order to have 2 RR print for $3 I did 2 transactions. My store is happy to let me go thru the line more than once ……but some store will limit you.
Now that's some Great info!!
Thanks to i heart wags

Go ahead now you try this!!
Do the same transactions like I and i heart wags
I actually follow her steps so please ck her out too!

Soon we all will master this, we just need to learn the ropes!!!

Why Coupon???

You can find a “thrifty deal” at just about any store you go to. All stores have deals it is how you use your coupons with the stores sales that really helps you save. You can just walk into any store and use a coupon you will save some money…but the key to saving is waiting to use a coupon with a really good sale. Walmart and Publix do tend to have lower prices over all, but they do not run promos very often like Albertsons and Walgreens. The goal is to stock up on these promo items at their lowest price point, and then use a coupon on top of that promo to get that item at its rock bottom price.

When you first start to coupon it is sometimes best to shop at the lowest price stores for your “must have items for that week” but set aside part of your budget for your stock up coupon items. That way you can feel ok about buying 30 cans of soup in a week, knowing that your family will now have soup for the next few months at is lowest price point. But you have also taken care of the basics first. Before long you kitchen pantry will be full of items that you got at their lowest price point or free. And you will not have to pay full price for them when you run out…instead of running to the store and paying full price you just run to your pantry.
